Mont-Tremblant National Park, Quebec, Lac Escalier

Lac Escalier campground is located further North of Lac Monroe. Escalier means "stairs" in French, and according to local myth, the lake was named "Escalier", or "Stairs", after the ridge across from the campground that looks like three large steps.

In this look from the campground the mountains across the lake resemble three large steps.
Getting There

Unless you know where you are going, I would like to suggest you to aim first for one of the larger offices: either La Diable Registration Centre, or Lac Monroe Discovery Centre. You will be able to check in, get your paperwork, maps, firewood and make one last call to the mainland before you move further. There has not been cell phone service or the phone line available at Lac Escalier campground by 2017.

If you use GPS device or maps app while aiming straight for Lac Escalier, it may navigate you around the park. This may not necessarily be a shorter route, but the one definitely bypassing the larger offices.

I have to say that there was an emergency radio in the back of the Lac Escalier campground office connecting you with one of the larger offices. Knowledge of French helps significantly, especially over the radio conversations.

The offices have different working hours, but complement each other in terms of meeting the campers.

Roll the images below around to see more.

There are ten campsites available for canoe-camping on the lake. Click here for more information on booking canoe-camping campsites.

You can rent canoe or kayak from the local office, the grey colour building in the back. The emergency radio is on the back wall of the building on the left hand side.

There is a boat launch, but we have not seen any motorboats other than the one that belongs to the park. The lake would normally be open for fishing, although one would have to purchase an extra license to fish in the park on the top of the regular Quebec fishing license.

There was no fishing on the lake in 2017 by the way.

There is also fish in the river feeding the lake. It also makes a 5 km long scenic route for kayakers and canoeists. One needs to take left after launching at the campground, go by the beach and then enter the river. It is flat water paddling for about 5 km up the stream until you see the bridge and the rapids. See the map below:

The campground has a day use beach, large comfort station with flash toilets and showers, as well as number of outhouses spread across the grounds.
